The Tiroler Festspiele Erl

Cultural Delight

Since their inception in 1997 by conductor and director Gustav Kuhn, the Tiroler Festspiele Erl have become a central part of the Austrian and European cultural landscape and resonate far beyond the country's borders. Far from the big cities, music at the highest level has flourished on this fertile ground for more than twenty-five years in the midst of beautiful nature.

Against the breathtaking backdrop of the Kaisergebirge, international artists dedicate themselves with great passion to the most important works of classical music and musical theater during the summer and winter seasons, as well as during the finale or as part of the Easter Festival. The cultivation of contemporary music and educational work also plays an important role in the festival program.

Erl, which is culturally shaped by the 400-year history of the Passion Plays, thus becomes a place where artistic skill and ambition combine in a special atmosphere to create unique concert and musical theater experiences!

Choir

Powerful Voices

The Tiroler Festspiele Erl choir was founded in 2007 to provide a musical counterpart to the orchestra of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl. It is adapted to the requirements of each production every year. The 32-member core ensemble can be expanded as needed.

The gentlemen and ladies of the choir belong to the state 'Capella Minsk' and prepare their scores at home. For the final rehearsals, they travel to Erl. Here, the choir is united with the soloists and the orchestra - on site, the work receives the final touch. In the future, directors will also have the opportunity to work with this experienced and powerful choir.

Orchestra

Resonant

The heart of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl is the orchestra, in which young talents and instrumentalists of outstanding international orchestras have come together since 1999 to form a sound body of excellent quality. The cohesion of the individual musicians with the Tiroler Festspiele Erl is characterized by passion, virtuosity and enthusiasm. In production-dependent different lineups, the artists can grow together over the years - the foundation for a productive collaboration from the first rehearsal day.

The stylistic breadth of the orchestra encompasses significant, but also lesser-known works of opera and symphonic literature from Baroque to Romanticism, up to contemporary repertoire.

The Festspielhaus Erl

The concert hall of the festival house is itself an instrument. Freestanding walls made of Canadian acacia wood enable the architecture to resonate. On the steeply rising auditorium, which offers an excellent view from every seat and is modeled after a Greek theater, 732 spectators find their place. The acoustics are praised as among the best in Europe, as complete transparency of sound is achieved even with larger orchestrations. Musicians from all over the world appreciate the acoustics and gladly choose the hall for recording sessions as well. At its opening, the orchestra pit was the largest of its kind in the entire world. The stage area is approximately 450 square meters and is constantly being expanded.

The new house of the Tyrolean Festival Erl was designed by the Viennese architectural firm Delugan Meissl Architects. The striking, black-colored facade appears both bold and restrained alongside the white Passionsspielhaus. The festival house respects the ascending form of the neighboring Passionsspielhaus and sets contrasting horizontal accents. At the same time, the distinctive forms of the festival house are reminiscent of the thorns from the 'Erl Crown of Thorns,' the heraldic emblem of the village. The unique ensemble of both houses stands in wonderful dialogue with nature and the seasons, and thus the houses alternate in their visual prominence depending on the season.

The Passionsspielhaus

The Passionsspielhaus has long been a landmark of the community of Erl. In its emerging form, the radiant white house is visible from afar. The impressive building was built in 1959 according to the plans of Robert Schuler. Originally, the house was exclusively intended for the Passion Plays, which take place every six years in the summer.

Until today, the house is not heated and can therefore only be played in the summer. In the Passionsspielhaus, up to 1,500 visitors can find a place on gently sloping rows of seats. The atmosphere in this spacious room is exceptional. Likewise the acoustics: The Passionsspielhaus was designed at a time when artists were required to play unamplified. Through the unusual architecture, the sound density increases over the heads of the spectators and reaches every individual seat.
