On Site

The infrastructure around the Festspielhaus

The Festspielhaus isn't isolated, as one might think when looking at the meadows and forests in front of and behind its striking architecture. Quite the opposite: the building benefits from an excellent infrastructure in the neighborhood, which simplifies life for artists and guests alike.

We politely ask our visitors to support our seasons by adapting their clothing to the festive atmosphere, for example, by refraining from shorts, sports shoes, and workout clothes.

Festspielhaus

The Festspielhaus auditorium is itself an instrument. Freestanding walls made of Canadian acacia wood allow the architecture to resonate. The steeply rising stands, which offer excellent views throughout, seat 732 spectators. At its opening, the orchestra pit was the largest of its kind in the world. The stage area measures approximately 450 square meters. The new building of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl was designed by the Viennese architectural firm Delugan Meissl Architects. The striking, black façade appears both bold and restrained next to the white Passionsspielhaus. The Festspielhaus respects the upwardly sloping form of the neighboring Passionsspielhaus and creates contrasting horizontal impulses. The unique ensemble of the two buildings forms a wonderful dialogue with nature.

Passionsspielhaus

The Passionsspielhaus has become a landmark in the village of Erl. With its soaring form, the gleaming white house is visible from afar. The impressive building was constructed in 1959 according to plans by Robert Schuler. Originally, the house was intended exclusively for the Passion Play, which takes place every six years in the summer. To this day, the house is not heated and is therefore only open for performances in the summer. The Passionsspielhaus can accommodate up to 1,500 visitors on gently sloping benches. The atmosphere in the spacious space is extraordinary. Likewise the acoustics: The Passionsspielhaus was designed at a time when artists were dependent on unamplified performances. The unusual architecture condenses the sound above the heads of the audience, reaching every single seat.

Parking Garage

Concurrent with the construction of the Festspielhaus, a parking garage was built in close proximity to both festival venues. The modern building was designed by MHM architects from Vienna. The parking garage offers a total of 450 parking spaces on three floors. On performance days, a shuttle service connects the parking garage and the Festspielhaus. The parking garage is only ten minutes away on foot: ten minutes strolling past meadows and fields. Ten minutes spent in anticipation of the cultural experience. Ten minutes in which the sounds you hear can resonate.

The Premierenhaus

From the Premierenhaus, you have the best view of the two festival halls, which rise against a fantastic mountain panorama. The floor-to-ceiling windows allow plenty of light into the spacious rooms of the seven suites. The building was constructed primarily from local wood, thus in keeping with the concept of sustainability. The Premierenhaus offers you the highest level of comfort for your cultural holiday in Erl.

The Künstler:innen Residenz

Our artists benefit from the artist residence built in 2018. They live just a few minutes from the Festspielhaus. For rehearsals and performances, our artists relocate to Erl. This lends the village, previously known more for cows than double basses, an international flair. The festival universe thus extends far beyond the walls of the house.
