Gustav Mahler goes Circus

A creation by Yaron Lifschitz and Franui Musicbanda with the Circa Ensemble and students of the Tyrolean Ballet School

Urlicht Primal Light brings Austria and Australia together: the local Franui Musicbanda and Circa, a circus company from Brisbane. The production creates a novel combination of acrobatics and musical theater. Based on a shared love of Gustav Mahler's songs, Franui's Mahler Lieder album forms the musical backbone, which has been reworked, expanded and adapted for this live performance. To this end, the artistic director of the dance company, Yaron Lifschitz, developed a physical score of body worlds and sculptures with the acrobats of the Circa group. The production celebrated its acclaimed premiere in April last year at the Salzkammergut 2024 Capital of Culture in Bad Ischl.

Seit 1999 ist er Künstlerischer Leiter von Circa Contemporary Circus (früherer Name: Rock n' Roll Circus). Zu seinen jüngsten Arbeiten mit der Gruppe zählen On By Circa (2022), Wolf (2024), Daphnis et Chloé (2025) Wolfgang in the Stairs (2025) und Revoir les étoiles (2026).

Libby McDonnell Costumes

Libby McDonnell studierte Bildende Kunst am Queensland College of Art and Design – Griffith University und Tanz an der Queensland University of Technology. Sie steht als Tänzerin auf der Bühne und entwickelt Tanzperformances, außerdem ist sie als Pädagogin tätig. Sie ist künstlerische Leiterin des Ballet Theatre of Queensland und arbeitet als Choreografin für die Blue Room Theatre Company. Seit elf Jahren ist sie im Team von Circa und wirkt in der Konzeption und Entwicklung von Produktionen für weltweit gastierende Produktionen mit. Seither hat sie die Kostüme für über dreißig Produktionen entworfen, bei drei Projekten als Co-Regisseurin mitgewirkt und viele Kulturvermittlungs-Projekte des Ensembles geleitet, u. a. das Pilotprojekt des Circability-Programms.

Musicbanda Franui Performer

Franui ist der Name einer Almwiese im Osttiroler Dorf Innervillgraten, in dem der Großteil der Musiker:innen der gleichnamigen Musicbanda aufgewachsen ist. Franui spielt seit 1993 in nahezu unveränderter Besetzung und ist bei vielen Festivals und Veranstaltern zu Gast, u. a. im Wiener Konzerthaus, am Burgtheater, bei den Salzburger und Bregenzer Festspielen, an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, bei den Münchner Opernfestspielen, in der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, der Philharmonie de Paris und am Schauspielhaus Zürich. Mit seinen Neuinterpretationen der Lieder von Schubert, Schumann, Brahms und Mahler wurde das Ensemble weitum bekannt. Es versteht sich als „Umspannwerk zwischen Klassik, Volksmusik, Jazz und zeitgenössischer Kammermusik“. Die Musiker:innen arbeiten häufig mit herausragenden Bühnenpartner:innen zusammen, u. a. mit dem Bassbariton Florian Boesch, dem Puppenspieler Nikolaus Habjan, dem Wienerlied-Duo Die Strottern und dem Kabarett-Duo Maschek.

Tiroler Ballettschule Performer

Die Tiroler Ballettschule wurde 1989 von Beate Stibig-Nikkanen gegründet und erhielt früh hohe Aufmerksamkeit dank der Einbindung internationaler Tänzer:innen und Choreograf:innen, die den Grundstein für die angeschlossenen Tanzakademie bildete. Zahlreiche internationale Choreografie- und Tanzpreise bestätigen die künstlerische Arbeit. Das jährlich in Kooperation durchgeführte internationale jährliche Dance Alps Festival untermauert das hohe tänzerische Niveau. Solist:innen, Choreograf:innen und Dozent:innen aus Japan, Tansania, USA und Australien treffen jeden Sommer in St. Johann auf Tänzer:innen, Tanzpädagog:inen und Tanzstudierende aus aller Welt. Die Ballettschule wirkt darüber hinaus in Tanztheater- und Kinderballettproduktionen sowie in TV-Produktionen und bei Sport-Großveranstaltungen mit.
