Following the undoubtedly striking juxtaposition of Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Requiem on Palm Sunday 2027, a new, deliberately crafted pairing will be presented on Holy Saturday. Principal Conductor Asher Fisch pairs the Requiem with another musical reflection on death and transience.
The starting point is Franz Schubert's song Death and the Maiden, which portrays the dialogue between a young girl and Death in a manner that is as simple as it is harrowing. The will to live and the vision of death as a quiet redemption stand in contrast to one another. Gustav Mahler arranged Schubert’s string quartet movement for string orchestra—thus creating a seamless transition into Mozart’s Requiem. The result is a haunting musical arc that creates space for contemplative, individual experience.
