When one thinks of "The Birds", one probably thinks first of Hitchcock. Theatergoers might still know somewhere, well hidden in a drawer or the depths of the brain, that there is also a comedy of the same name by Aristophanes. As preparation for the Summer Festival, Leokino Innsbruck now shows Hitchcock's classic "The Birds" in cooperation with Tiroler Festspiele Erl on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at 6:00 PM.
... and hardly anyone knows that there is an overwhelming opera by Walter Braunfels that is also called "The Birds" and is based on this very comedy. This intoxicating work plays an important role at Tiroler Festspiele Erl this summer (July 20 and 27) under the musical direction of Lothar Zagrosek and directed by Tina Lanik. And it makes amazingly much sense, so to speak as an introduction, to show the most famous work of this name as a preparation for the opera. "Also the people shall sacrifice to you, otherwise your grim anger will strike them: like a storm you descend, pick away the seed, churn up the grain, hack out the eyes of sheep and cattle, so it cannot fail, victory blooms for you." Nothing other than what happens in Hitchcock's film is threatened to the people in Braunfels' opera: Of course, this does not happen in the opera, Zeus puts an end to the ornithological ambitions for domination. Without the intervention of the god, however, the feathered apocalypse would not have occurred in 1963, but already in 1920.
In this sense, Tiroler Festspiele Erl are particularly pleased to be able to present this Hitchcock classic to you. But you should keep the cinema ticket safe: With it you get 10% discount on the magnificent "The Birds" by Walter Braunfels on July 20 and 27 in the Festspielhaus in Erl.
