For many years the International Academy for Mastersingers has meant the launching pad for a successful career. Since the end of her active singing career Edith Wiens has, as director of the academy trained the promising younger generation here.
She is supported by the untiring Brigitte Fassbaender. Formerly one of the most successful mezzo-sopranos of her generation she now dedicates herself with great enthusiasm to training young singers and also to stage-directing. Audiences in Erl have a chance to experience her insights as a director through the new productions of Siegfried and Götterdämmerung.
Some of the graduates of the academy now present their skills with showpiece arias from bel canto operas, including well-known classics such as Il Barbiere di Siviglia and L’elisir d’amore and also from I Capuleti e I Montecchi, one of the rarely heard gems. It is not an exaggeration to say that the singers in this evening’s concert belong to the most talented of their generation. Hyoyoung Kim, for instance, is currently a member of the Frankfurt Opera Studio where she has already sung Pamina and Papagena.
Andrew Hamilton is a regular member of the ensemble of the Bavarian State Opera and by joining this top-class opera house has thus made an ideal start to his career.
